The show is is a series of animated episodes that try to bring these characters to life for children. The series is based on various ancient and sacred texts in the Indian and Hindu culture – the Upanishads, Vedas, Panchatantra, Ramayana, Mahabharatha, etc. Amar Chitra Katha was Pai’s effort to educate the masses more about the same.
The inspiration behind Amar Chitra Katha was the fact that Indian children knew a lot about Greek and Roman mythology but could seldom answer basic questions about Indian history. To make it appealing to the modern era, the comics were commissioned into a television series. They were created by AnantPai in 1980’s to teach children about Indian history. The show is inspired by the large number of comics released under the same name. While primarily produced in Hindi it was dubbed into multiple languages. The series is based on the comics by the same name created by AnantPai.
